Welcome to our Community Collaboration Project for 2024, Flowers in the Sun!

We joined forces once again with sewists, embroiderers, and crafters throughout Australia to create a patchwork quilt in support of the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation.

Our aim for this community project was to create a symbol of hope and solidarity for all those who have been touched by melanoma, and a reminder of the need for research and action to fight this disease.

Creating Flowers in the Sun nudged us to remember the significance of being sun safe in our sunburnt country, and served as a timely reminder to get regular skin checks. This project was also a fun way to challenge yourself, learn some new creative techniques and let your craft ‘shine’ to create something meaningful.

Who can create this project?

Participation was open to any creator in Australia. Participants simply chose a block to make on their machine, create, and then send their contribution to us. This project can still be created at home past the community project closing date using the resources provided. Keep it for yourself or gift it to someone special!

There were four different styles of block to choose from, or they could try all four! These included:

  • Machine Embroidery Block
  • Machine Embroidery Applique block
  • Sewing Machine Applique block
  • a block created with heat transfer vinyl for all the cutting crafters!

From March to July 2024, we demonstrated how to create each block using different techniques.

Design file requirements

To join this project, participants purchased the design pack which includes all design files intended for use in the project. All proceeds from the purchase of this product throughout the 2024 calendar year were donated to the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation.

How can you follow this project?

Demonstration videos were released between March to July 2024 where we showed you how to create each block using different techniques. The finished project was revealed in October 2024.

 Australian Melanoma Research Foundation

The Australian Melanoma Research Foundation (AMRF) is a not-for-profit charity organisation that supports research, awareness, and early detection of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. The AMRF was established in 2006 by a group of dedicated volunteers who wanted to make a difference in the lives of Australians affected by melanoma.

The AMRF provides funding for post-graduate students and early career researchers who are working on innovative projects to prevent, diagnose, and treat melanoma. The AMRF also educates the public about the importance of sun safety and regular skin checks to reduce the risk of melanoma.

Our aim for this community project was to create a symbol of hope and solidarity for all those who have been touched by melanoma, and a reminder of the need for more research and action to fight this disease.
