Sew your own reusable grocery bag

As you would know, the Queensland government banned the supply of single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags in July 2018. You too can join in and do your part in reducing the plastic pollution on our environment and especially on our marine life by creating your very own reusable grocery bags!
Included in the project is the bag and bag case so you can easily store this in your handbag, car or pocket. This project is perfect for beginner sewers.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Sewing machine
- Material 60cm height x 50cm width
Consider using Cotton or Hemp, which are both environmentally friendly fabrics - Bias Binding x 1m
- Scissors
- Button or Button Snap

THE EMBROIDERY DESIGN
We’ve included a free Fruit embroidery design (zip, 118kb), to get you started in decorating your grocery bag! This design is perfect for the Brother NV180 Sewing and Embroidery machine fitting a 100mm x 100mm (4″ x 4″) embroidery hoop.
This design can be created using Perla, Embrilliance or Hatch embroidery software. Simply create your own embroidery design with the freehand tool and then combine it with any of the standards fonts available within the digitising software. If you’re looking for some vector designs, which you can import into these digitizing programs, we recommend VectorStock.com.
Each program is unique so we recommend trialling them prior to making your purchase. You can download the trial versions online or call us on 1800 000 360 for more information.
HOW TO MAKE A REUSABLE GROCERY BAG
- Download the Reusable Grocery Bag sewing pattern (PDF, 414kb)
- Prepare and cut out your fabric
- Decorate with embroidery
- Stitch your bag and case using the instructions (PDF, 2MB)

Echidna project material/ fabric requirements are an indication only and can seem to be generous. This has been intentional. Should you make a cutting or embroidery mistake you will have sufficient fabric to rectify your error.

Great gift idea
By: PETER TURNER on 17 June 2020I will certainly knock up a few of these as gifts as well as for myself. I will use hemp as cotton is not really environmentally friendly. It uses massive amounts of water taken from the Murray Darling river system.
