Necktie

Date Posted:14 November 2022

If you’re stuck for a gift for your husband, father, or a special friend, what better gift than a handmade tie? This project is very easy to make and can be created using a wide variety of fabrics. We recommend using a soft satin or silk, something that drapes nicely. However, you can also make the tie from cotton or a similar fabric.

This project is great for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. We recommend only creating a necktie with satin or silk if you are an experienced sewist.

What you'll need:

  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric 1 (You will need 1 metre)
  • Fabric 2 (You will need 1 metre)

  • Sewing scissors, or a rotary cutter & mat
  • Pins or small clips

The steps below are just an overview of the project instructions and must be used in conjunction with the tutorial video. Print these steps out to have beside you when watching the video as a reminder.

  6. Connect the main tie pieces on a right angle (right sides together).

  8. Align your large lining piece along the diagonal edge of the bigger end of the tie piece, right sides together. Pin or clip.
  9. Sew with a straight stitch and a ½" seam allowance.
  10. Align the other edge of your lining to the other edge of your main piece. Pin or clip.
  11. Sew with a straight stitch and a ½" seam allowance.
  12. Sew across the excess and trim.
  13. Fold tie in half right sides together and sew a straight line directly across the tip. Trim excess.
  14. Repeat steps 8-13 with the other lining piece on the other end of your tie.
  15. Flip the ends right side out and press flat with your iron.
  16. Fold holder tab in half widthways and stitch long edge together with a ¼” seam allowance and a straight stitch.
  17. Use loop turner to turn right side out.
  18. Press flat with your iron.
  19. Mark a point 9” up from the bottom triangles tip, along the side edge on the right side.
  20. Fold holder in half and pin ¼” off the mark, making sure the holder is facing towards the middle of the tie.
  21. Fold tie in half lengthways. Right sides together.
  22. Sew with a straight stitch and a ¼” seam allowance
  23. Press the seam in the middle of the tie open with your iron.
